Namunukula is one of Sri Lanka's 12 highest mountains and by far the tallest peak in the east of Sri Lanka's southern mountain range, which stretches 100 kilometers from Siri Pada (Adam's Peak) in the west to Namunukula in the east.

Spring Valley, the tea plantation area closest to Badulla, is dominated by Namunukula. Passara, another tea region of Uva, is located on the other side of the mountain. Uva tea is grown in the 40-kilometer-long west-east stretch from Horton Plains to Namunukula. In terms of distance, the crow flies. The most prominent peak in this Uva tea region is Namunukula.

Some paths lead to the Namunukula mountain plateau. The most straightforward branch is near the pass between Spring Valley and Passara. Because Spring Valley has only one road, the pass is easy to find.

Simply take the B97 through Spring Valley to Demodara, then turn left at the supermarket in the center of Spring Valley and follow this side road almost to the top. The hiking path branches off to the left about 300 meters before reaching the pass. The ascent does not necessitate any climbing skills, but it is a strenuous steep hike uphill.

Macaque monkeys, Sambhar deer, and wild boars live in the forested area. Leopards can also be found in the forested highlands of Sri Lanka. A hiker, on the other hand, is unlikely to come across them.
